Landhuis Rooi Catootje

Landhuis Rooi Catootje, located in the heart of Curaçao, is a historic gem that reflects the island's rich culture and history. This beautiful country house, built in the 18th century, was once home to the prominent Maduro family and served as a center for social and cultural gatherings. Today, the mansion houses a museum that takes visitors on a journey through time, with exhibits highlighting colonial history, the influence of the Maduro family and the mansion's strategic role during World War II. Surrounded by lush gardens and tropical flora, Landhuis Rooi Catootje offers a unique and serene experience, ideal for history buffs and nature lovers.

History

Landhuis Rooi Catootje, originally built as a plantation house, reflects the evolution of Curaçao's rich history and culture. Due to a period of extreme drought, the plantation lost its economic importance and the landhouse was transformed into a country residence. Around 1820, the core of the present landhouse arose. Since 1853, the mansion has been owned by the Jewish Maduro family. Salomon Elias Levy (Monchi) Maduro donated the mansion to his wife Rebecca Curiel, including its entire contents and thirteen enslaved people. He added an additional floor to the original structure.

The mansion later became the domain of their grandson Mongui Maduro, a passionate collector of Antillean and Jewish artifacts. Mongui had a wish that his extensive and valuable collection remain accessible to the public after his death. In honor of his wish, his daughter Ena Dankmeijer-Maduro established the Mongui Maduro Foundation in 1974 to preserve his collection and the Rooi Catootje estate. Today, the mansion offers a unique insight into the colonial history of Curaçao, the legacy of the Maduro family and the cultural treasures Mongui carefully collected.

What is it used for now?

Today, Landhuis Rooi Catootje tells the story of plantation architecture and agriculture. The bathhouse shows another piece of ingenious living without a water supply. The mansion houses a museum that offers visitors a deep insight into the history of the island, the Maduro family and economic developments over the centuries. The museum displays an extensive collection of antique furniture, artwork and historical documents that bring the story of Curaçao to life.

Visitors can also enjoy the hofi, where there are plenty of mango trees and palms. The hofi also acts as a water management system and is equipped with three dams, located a little further from the manor house. Native plants and exotic flowers provide a colorful backdrop for this historic landmark. The mansion also hosts cultural events, lectures and concerts, keeping it a vibrant center for culture and history.
